ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY OPEN INNOVATION CHALLENGE

The Sustainability Open Innovation Challenge (SOIC) has been an initiative that serves as an instrumental platform in the ongoing global effort to tackle pressing sustainability issues. Since its inception in 2019, SOIC has consistently played a significant role in fostering innovative solutions to address environmental threats and promote sustainable practices on a global scale, starting from Singapore.

Organised by Enterprise Singapore, the challenge brings together visionary industry partners and dynamic innovators to collaboratively develop groundbreaking solutions across sectors.

OBJECTIVES

Addressing Global Challenges

The programme aims to channel collective innovation towards devising pragmatic solutions that can effectively mitigate the unprecedented challenges that the world faces.

Fostering Collaborative Innovation

SOIC creates an environment where industry partners, startups, and innovators collaborate to co-develop sustainable solutions, encouraging a synergistic exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Promoting Local and Regional Impact

Placing an emphasis on local and regional relevance, SOIC ensures that co-developed solutions have a meaningful impact on immediate communities while retaining the potential for widespread adoption.

Accelerating Sustainable Entrepreneurship

By offering grants, funding opportunities, and real-world testing facilitated by industry pioneers, SOIC nurtures a supportive ecosystem for sustainable entrepreneurship, accelerating growth for impactful startups.

Driving Tangible Changes

By encouraging the development of tangible, actionable solutions, the programme strives to enact real change in both the business landscape and the broader sustainability agenda.

SUSTAINABILITY OPEN INNOVATION CHALLENGE 2023

The fifth edition of the SOIC brings together industry partners and seeks innovative minds to co-develop sustainable solutions spanning various sectors. These solutions should have a local and regional focus before being scaled globally.

This year’s challenge contains two categories: demand-led challenge statements, and the Open Category. Our esteemed industry partners present demand-led challenge statements under these key themes: Climate Change, Green Buildings, Sustainable Agriculture & Trade, and Sustainable Materials. In this edition, we have 20 challenge statement owners contributing 22 challenge statements, with more than S$3mil in commitment. We also piloted the SOIC Open Category seeking for novel, emerging climate technologies. In total, more than 350 submissions were received from close to 70 countries.

The Open Category welcomes additional sustainability-focused solutions. Together with Temasek Foundation, EntepriseSG also piloted the SOIC Open Category seeking novel, emerging climate technologies. The SOIC Open Category serves as a one-stop application to SOIC, Temasek Foundation’s (TF)  The Liveability Challenge (TLC) and  Temasek  Trust’s (TT) Amplifier programme, to provide startups with more opportunities and support.

Successful innovators will gain a unique opportunity to engage in co-innovation with corporate partners, benefiting from their invaluable expertise, mentorship, and substantial resources. Prizes include over S$3,000,000 in support, including S$75,000 from Hexagon Group, as well as funding and real-world testing facilitated by industry pioneers.

Living Carbon is a vertically integrated project developer using advanced forest biotechnology for afforestation on degraded land, such as abandoned mineland and degraded agricultural land. These plantings include proprietary photosynthesis-enhanced trees that grow faster and capture more carbon, through a mechanism similar to photosynthesis in grasses. Landowners partnering with Living Carbon not only reap the economic benefits of additional carbon credit sales generated by their trees, but also enjoy the tangible benefits of reforested land.

Living Carbon believes high-quality nature-based and engineered solutions should be available to buyers, to incentivize the greatest number of impactful projects and provide buyers flexibility to develop customised portfolios. Living Carbon seeks to demonstrate a path to addressing cost and profitability obstacles historically associated with high-quality, locally beneficial reforestation projects.

Company Description:
Located in Japan and Western Europe, AC Biode pioneers award-winning patented breakthroughs in chemistry and electronics – “chemotronics” – to deploy novel engineering solutions for ecological sustainability. They have created innovations in AC power and created chemical catalysts that upcycle industrial ash and break down plastic waste.

They offer a variety of products that work towards improving sustainability. A product is Reco Glass, which captures CO2 through air filters and turns them into glass. It reduces the need for ventilation and thus energy usage of ventilation systems in buildings. Reco Glass is different because it adds CO2 capture to air filters with no new product required. The reduction of carbon footprint of glass production results in the same cost and strength as regular glass while enabling carbon capture for end users.

ProfilePrint's AI-powered toolbox of applications offers transformative solutions using proprietary A.I. methodologies coupled with sensor technologies that aim to revolutionise the way we source, verify, and trade ingredients, thereby setting in motion a new era of agricultural best practices.

One of our key solutions on our platform, Verify, facilitates rapid assessment by seamlessly connecting sellers with the right buyers, and allowing buyers to rapidly identify and validate the sensory and nutritional qualities almost real-time remotely without the need of shipping samples or expensive lab testing.

Company Description:
Adept Materials, formerly known as Techstyle Materials, was founded to make buildings more sustainable and comfortable. Buildings represent a very big piece of the energy pie. We can make deep cuts in energy use for heating and cooling by improving building envelopes. The challenge is doing that without compromising durability, comfort, or affordability.
They have developed climate-regulating paints and primers for building interiors that increase the energy efficiency, comfort, and durability of buildings. Adept's technology works by mimicking a plant’s ability to passively regulate humidity, temperature, and moisture levels. Adept products have the potential to reduce annual HVAC energy by 5-10%, according to numerical studies performed by the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The materials simultaneously increase occupant comfort and the moisture durability of the building.

Company Description:
CIRCRETE revolutionises the way we make concrete, a vital material in construction. Traditional concrete production contributes significantly to global CO2 emissions. CIRCRETE, however, is a groundbreaking alternative that cuts emissions by 70%.

Instead of using processes that release harmful CO2, CIRCRETE utilises an eco-friendly method called low-temperature flash calcination to activate marine clay. This not only reduces carbon footprint but also enhances concrete performance. It's a game changer for the construction industry, offering a greener and more sustainable solution without compromising on quality or durability. CIRCRETE is committed to partnering with industry stakeholders to introduce this innovation in real-world projects.

Company Description:
PURE ACTIVE WATER Pte Ltd is a Singaporean Company that designs sustainable and chemical free water treatments effective on microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses. Through an innovative and sustainable technology, ActivH2O, a French patented electrolysis process, natural oxidants are generated without adding any chemicals or salt. The oxidants remain active in the water for several weeks, removing biofilm and preventing recontamination. Furthermore, the efficiency of the technology with no water losses and reduced carbon footprint along with lower maintenance and the ease of installation and integration into existing systems pose as further advantages. Their technology is chemical free and not harmful to people, animals or the environment.

The ActivH2O system is already in operations globally across various industries: food, livestock, tech farm, and residential. A thoughtful and strategic approach based on the ‘where to play, how to win’ framework is established to guide PAW decision-making and planning. This also contributes to the ongoing development of a clear and actionable strategy which aligns with regional market opportunities and PAW’s strengths.
