Improving Energy Efficiency of Home Appliances with Materials or Tech
Main TrackSustainable MaterialsElectrolux Group

Electrolux Group
is a leading global appliance company that has shaped living for the better for more than 100 years. We reinvent taste, care and wellbeing experiences for millions of people, always striving to be at the forefront of sustainability in society through our solutions and operations. Under our group of leading appliance brands, including Electrolux, AEG and Frigidaire, we sell household products in around 120 markets every year.
Potential solutions may include advanced thermal insulation materials, enhanced heat exchangers, or other innovations that reduce energy loss, improve heat retention, and optimise thermal transfer, while ensuring household safety and product reliability.
Existing insulation and heat management technologies have reached their performance limits. New approaches are needed to minimise standby energy consumption and deliver system-level efficiency gains through novel materials, coatings, or engineered structures.
Preference will be given to solutions that demonstrate measurable energy savings and align with Electrolux’s sustainability goals, emphasising low environmental impact, scalability, and compatibility with existing manufacturing processes. Materials that incorporate recycled content and are recyclable are also preferred.
How might we improve the energy efficiency of home appliances with more sustainable materials or technologies that reduce heat loss or enhance insulation?
Requirements
Technical Requirements:
- Deliver measurable energy savings in target appliances: ovens, refrigerators, and dryers.
- Be safe for household use and compliant with relevant Electrolux safety and sustainability standards.
- Be scalable, cost-effective, and compatible with existing manufacturing technologies and processes.
- Enable easy implementation in mass production.
- Include thermal insulation capability and be flame-retardant where applicable.
- Utilise recycled content where possible, and be recyclable at end of life.
- Be applicable across multiple appliance categories; if not, priority interest is in this order: ovens, refrigerators, and dryers.
Performance Requirements:
- Deliver measurable energy savings in target appliances: ovens, refrigerators, and dryers.
- Reduce overall energy loss through improved insulation or enhanced heat-exchange performance.
- Demonstrate better thermal performance.
Who Should Apply:
- Expected Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 5 to 8
Potential Sustainability Impact:
- Reduced household energy consumption through higher-efficiency thermal systems
- Lower product carbon footprint and manufacturing energy use
- Increased use of recycled or recyclable materials in appliance production
- Scalable and sustainable innovations applicable across product lines and potentially the wider home appliance industry
POC / Pilot & INCENTIVES
Expected POC / Pilot & Timeline:
- Electrolux aims to identify solutions that can progress to POC development, with successful prototypes potentially integrated into selected appliance models for validation.
- You are encouraged to make a submission to this challenge statement before 31 December 2025.
POC / Pilot & Funding:
- Electrolux will provide POC / pilot support of up to EUR50,000 or around S$75,000, to be aligned to the POC / pilot scope.
- Enterprise Singapore is augmenting this support with a POC development grant of up to S$50,000 for eligible startups / SMEs. Foreign startups / SMEs may be considered if developmental activities are based in Singapore and only if a Singapore office is incorporated. The POC Development grant could also be awarded to startups / SMEs incorporated in Singapore for projects with overseas pilot deployment potential.
POC / Pilot Support:
- Collaboration and mentorship from Electrolux experts
- Access to lab facilities, datasets, and POC / pilot sites for testing and validation
- POC development budget will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis based on solution quality and feasibility.
- Opportunities for global scaling and IP collaboration under a “win-win” framework
