About the Challenge

Our environment is under stress; with the world population projected to climb by more than 25% from 7.8 billion in 2020 to 9.9 billion by 2050. Of this growing population, the urban population is expected to increase to 68%, further escalating the need to develop sustainable solutions to meet resource demands.

Access to clean air, clean water, power, and sanitation are challenges faced in many countries. Low-lying coastal communities such as Singapore are also more vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change. Globally, individuals, public agencies and companies - small and large - will need to work together to develop solutions for sustainable development.

Last year, Enterprise Singapore organised the first Sustainability Open Innovation Challenge (SOIC), which saw 14 challenge statements from 10 public and private demand drivers across four themes. Following the success of the first call, we are launching the second SOIC this year, bringing together government agencies, industry partners and innovators to develop more innovative sustainability solutions in Singapore - for the world. This call leverages Singapore's commitment to develop new technologies or solutions for key sustainability areas such as Waste Reduction, Green Transport, Green Packaging, Renewable Energy and Resource Efficiency.

We are inviting innovative companies to join the challenge. Challenge statement owners will provide user requirements, opportunities for test-bedding, and may potentially be your first customer.

“Sustainability has become an increasingly important part of our national agenda. We are planning our climate change defences and managing our carbon footprint. And COVID-19 has also shown Singaporeans how important the work is, which goes on behind the scenes on issues like food security and safety.”

- Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong

Enterprise Track

The Enterprise track calls for startups, SMEs, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and Research Institutes (RIs) to co-develop and testbed your innovative solutions with challenge statement owners across different industries, such as fast-moving consumer goods, home appliances, and tourism.

Promising and committed innovators will have the opportunity to work closely with challenge statement owners to co-develop solutions, and potentially acquire them as your reference customer. Companies that meet eligibility criteria for grant application may also be provided with funding support to develop the solutions.

Industry Track

Calling for startups, SMEs, Intitutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and Research Institutes (RIs) to tackle sectoral challenges for adoption at scale across the industry. This track is also featured as part of the National Innovation Challenges (NIC) that was announced by DPM Heng in the Fortitude Budget.

Each NIC challenge statement will be allocated up to S$2,000,000 in co-funding grant support (for eligible enterprises) from prototype, deployment to adoption. Challenge statement owners will drive adoption and procure successfully developed solutions from the innovators. This provides good customer references for solution providers to access commercial opportunities with potential global clients.
